Lab Test

An annual cultural art activation in the form of an experiential show. Artists exhibit and create multi-scale, multi-sensory installations, challenging conventional assumptions and exploring the interconnections among the built environment, creative technologies, and the artists' own works.

Each Lab Test showcases contemporary, emerging, and modern artists work encouraging the community to experience the distinct perspectives of each artist. Installations vary from fully completed works to concepts that bring visitors behind the curtain to view the process. This exhibition meshes medium and industry, combining fine art, architecture, and new media.

  • The month-long used the space as art residency in which several artists created unique works they had never tried before.

  • 12 artists curated to bring a diverse range of backgrounds. Architecture, design, fine art, sculpture, glass blowing, etc.

  • Over the month we changed an old unused space and city block into a cultural scene which hosted over 4 events and activations.

Process Over Outcome

Lab Test 001

Creating a cultural month-long event and revitalizing an unused storefront.

Lab Test 001 that took over an empty storefront at the corner of a once-bustling hub in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. The event asked 12 local artists to create work around the cornerstone of our creative practice at ERL, process over outcome. This month-long artist residency turned exhibition showcased the process behind each artist’s work, bringing the viewers behind the curtain and into their process.

Screen Print Totes

Designs for each of the 4 events were created on-site throughout the evening, each piece being a custom piece based of several screen print designs.

ERL NEW WORKS

During the month-long process, ERL slowly updated our installation from an immersive lab experiment showcased in a darkroom into multiple final works. During the exploration process “The Flat Moon Society” was born. Installations included custom soundscapes, several lighting installations, cast sculptures, and hung artworks.
